La Chic. Hair, beauty and hoslistic therapy

In celebration of beauty salons being open since the pandemic shut down I decided to treat myself.

I booked a microdermabrasion facial at La Chic Why did I choose them?  In my attempt to support small businesses this was my main decider on which salon to go to.  Plus the profile picture was a black model.

If I am scoring salons on their performance the areas I would consider are receptionist, initial welcome, treatment and price. So with these in mind I'll discuss my subjective experience. 

When I phoned to book the appointment the male receptionist was very abrupt and even went as far as to lecture me on what I 'should' have before my appointment. The word should is like a red flag to me so immediate I did not feel comfortable. He hadn't even found out anything about my enquiry before he started his demands. Plus his treatment knowledge seemed to be zero, but as the treatment had already been paid  I persevered.

On arriving at the salon the welcome was Luke-warm, the door was opened for me but no greeting, smile or enquiry of who I was. I was given my Covid19 consultation sheet to fill out [well done them!], but no consultation about my expectations of the treatment, which in turn meant no suggestion of a treatment plan. 
As a prospective client the point of only booking one treatment is to decide if I like the treatment and the salon before I commit to a course of treatments.

The treatment was good. The therapist knew what she was doing. In fact you know when you can feel that someone is a nice person this lady felt like that, but with no introduction I don't even know her name. 

Sadly a treatment that I thought should take at least 30 minutes was completed within 18 minutes. On saying that the results were still good. She announced that the treatment was finished and left the room. 
This left me feeling as if I was an inconvenience. There was no mention about skin care advice, suggestions of products to use or follow up treatment.  I thought the whole point was to introduce  new clients to the salon and get them to come back. 


As a therapist I have to confess I have been guilty of similar behaviour. My excuse is that I had a busy salon and needed to move on to the next client. By no means was this salon busy, but I suppose we all have our off days. Plus on their website they have glowing testimonials [these are dated back to 2013]. Maybe I just went on the wrong day or perhaps wrong year and complacency has set in.

With salons re-opening after the lock-down I would suggest client care has to be at the top of the list to get repeat business flowing again. 

I asked for a leaflet.  The treatment list is comprehensive and prices are reasonable. The female receptionist informed me that because of the lock down they hadn't put in all the treatments they were planning which included glycolic acid peels and microblading.

Would I return to this salon? Only if I was desperate for a treatment that I needed to be done quickly, but not as a relaxing spa experience - no O would not go back.

Scoring out of 5 for each area I discussd.

Generally people think he’s in his 60’s behaving like a 40 year old, because of his energy and attitude to life. Most people are surprised to learn his age. He is 92 years young.

On Saturday 18th April He slipped and ended up in Falmouth Hospital they diagnosed a broken hip.

LEARNERS ARE DOING GREAT

I am working within The Community at an Adult Education Centre. It is a different set-up to the Further Education College. Although similar qualifications can be gained these courses are Government sponsored and in some cases free depending on the Students' situation.

The Learners that are at the Adult Education Centre have a different attitude to learning to those that are at Further Education Colleges. They are mostly adult learners either looking at a change of career, or have worked mostly as a housewives perhaps returning to work after a long break. Often lacking in confidence, but worst of all feeling that they have failed before. Whether it is failed to have decided on a career when they were younger or failed at several other attempts and becoming a Beauty Therapist is what they envisage an easy choice.

Imagine the anxiety that is felt when they discover that anatomy and physiology is included in the curriculum. Some decide they've failed before and survived so failing again is how the cookie crumbles.

Then they come into my class. In the induction I let them know failing is not an option so if they've joined thinking it does not matter if they pass or complete the course; they should not come to the second class as I do not accept learners that intend to fail.

My learners are doing great!!

Beauty therapy students start the course keen to carry out treatments only to discover that there are other unit/subjects that are needed to complete the qualification.  For instance Health and Safety and Client Care which when we think about it we might agree that for the profession this under pinning knowledge is necessary.

Then the other units/subjects are introduced and that is when the students start to ask why? One particular unit that often catches them off guard is the anatomy and physiology. Some feel empowered and learn way above what the criteria requires whilst others bow out of the course hastily. Saying if they wanted to be a Doctor they would have gone to medical school.

As a beauty therapy lecturer I try to create a balance. On one side I have a student that knows every chamber of the heart and the names of arteries and veins in minute detail while another student struggles to identify the difference between a vein and an artery.

I have written a book to engage learners that are studying for their beauty exam and to lead these students through the criteria without going off track. An example of going off track is that although it is necessary to identify the circulatory system of the body we do not need medical student details that will not be asked in a beauty exam. This book is with the publishers, so until publication I will post examples of these exams questions for you to see and hopefully answer.

CONVERSATION CLUB

I had no idea such a thing existed. A Comversation Club? An opportunity for isolated people to get out and talk, talk to someone. Improve their English and interact with others.
I was invited to present a treatment, I did hand massages. A very close, connective treatment which force a verbal interaction. 
There was knitting sessions, bag printing, present box making and clay making sessions.
People brought there families with them.
There were all levels of the English language from single syllable to full blown conversations, but everyone had a word to say.
As an outsider looking in I thought it was a success and everyone wanted to be there. Plus a great venue. Vestry House Museum.
A really enjoyable day.
